The total time taken on the return trip back to Mettupalayam is about 3½ hours. However, this train service is often disrupted during the heavy monsoon season.

Adhar Devi Temple:
Three kilometres (almost two miles) north from the town center, down a path at the end of Subhash Road, is the Adhar Devi Temple from where you get a fine view of Mount Abu. The temple to the goddess is carved out of a huge rock and is reached by an ascent of 200 steps. To the north of Adhar Devi Temple is Trevor's Tank, the area around which has been declared a wildlife sanctuary.

Dilwara Jain Temple :
The Dilwara Jain Temples stand on the road to the Guru Shikar Peak, under an hour's gentle walk from the center of town going northwest. Dilwara Jain Temple was built during the rule of the stable Solanki dynasty of Gujarat (11th -13th centuries) whose territory included parts of Rajasthan. The period of Solanki rule saw one of the most prolific developments in architecture in north India. Gujarat was a center of commerce and the arts. It was an age of opulence and spiritual devotion. Senior ministers, many of them Jains, used their great wealth to build both Hindu and Jain temples, and the general public contributed small amounts on a large scale .

Vimal Vanshi Temple :
The Vimal Vasahi Temple, constructed of white marble from the mine at Makrana, was built in 1031 in the village of Dilwara by Vimal Shah, a minister of the first Solanki ruler. The temple is dedicated to Adinath, or Rishabh Deo, the first sage of the Jain religion. It was the Jain custom to build on summits of mountains as they consider high places sacred. The temple is surrounded by a high enclosure wall of 52 cells which contain seated figures of Adinath. Facing the entrance is a six pillared pavilion with a representation of the holy mountain of the Jains in the center. It is surrounded by ten statues of the founder and his family, each member seated on an elephant. The temple interior is a profusion of rich carving. There is a columned hall before the main shrine. The dome at the center is built of 11 concentric rings, five depicting patterns of figures and animals. Superimposed on the rings of carvings are 16 female figures or vidyadevis or goddesses of knowledge. A passage between two sets of pillars leads to the main shrine and its figure or Adinath.

Tejpal Temple :
The Tejpal, or Luna Vasahi, Temple was built two centuries later under the patronage of Vastupal and Tejpal, two brothers who were the powerlul ministers or a later Solanki ruler. Rewards of silver and gold were offered to the masons. The temple, dedicated to the 22nd Jain Tirthanhara, Neminath, whose symbol is the conch shell, is very similar to the Vimal temple, showing how little building styles had changed over 200 years. In this temple, however, there is a deeper attention to detail. The excellence of the workmanship can be seen in the lotus flower pendant at the center or the dome which is so finely carved as to be almost transparent. The porticos or the 39 cells surrounding the sanctuary are ornamented with carvings depicting various episodes in ' Neminath's life. One shows his decision to renounce the world after seeing a procession or animals being led to the slaughter ror his wedding feast. Jains do not believe in violence and show respect ror all rorms of life.

CHANDRA TAAL
The natural lake of Chandrataal is situated at about 14,000 ft above msl between a low ridge and about nine kms from the Kunzom pass. The lake lies in a broad grassy plain which in ancient times was a glacier. The lake is about a kilometre in length and half of it in breadth. Its circumambulation is five kms long. There is a brownish patch "Samundari Tapu" in the middle of the lake which a number of people have tried to reach but in vain. There is a story of a mermaid living in the glacial lake. This is also said that a shepherd from Hansa village in the Spiti valley fell in love with the fairy and spent some time with her under the water. Cranes and ducks abound in the lake.

SURAJ TAAL
Suraj Taal or the lake of the Sun god is situated well on the summit of the Baralacha la, a little below an altitude of 16000 feet. The Bhaga river rises in this lake which is situated in a beautiful natural amphitheatre just below the highway. "During winters it remains in the grip of a pall of ice untidy with lumps of frozen snow and jutting stones". But in the summer season this tarn comes back to its glorious charm, the deep blue of its icy waters reflecting craggy mountains and snowy heights. This is an ideal halting place for having a bite that one might be carrying. No shops or dhabas are available around this place.

JISPA
This beautiful spot is 22 kms away from Keylong and 4 kms ahead of Ghemur. The village is situated at the junction of two nullahs with the main river Bhaga. Jispa has a very large dry river-bed, a rarity in Lahaul. Just on the edge of the river Bhaga is a small PWD rest house. Near this the river is shallow and plenty of trout fish can be caught during summers. The place is virtually an angler's delight. Good juniper plantation is around this village.

Introduction

Kullu was once known as Kulanthpitha, which means the end of the habitable world. History

The Kullu valley started getting inhabited in the 1st Century AD. By the medieval period, it was ruled by many local rulers. At that time the capital was Jagatsukh, about 5 km south of Manali but in the seventeenth century it was moved to Kullu. Then the boundaries of the kingdom went as far as to the Lahaul-Spiti and river Sutlej in the East. But it was still pretty much a secluded and isolated area till it came under British rule, which connected it to other parts of the country.

By Air : The airport at Bhuntar is 10-km from Kullu, where taxis and buses are available.

By Rail : The closest narrow gauge railhead is at Jogindernagar, 95-km from Kullu.

Raghunathji Temple : In the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu committed a great wrong. To atone for the sin he sent a senior courtier to Ayodhya for a statue of Lord Raghunath - Lord Ram. This temple was built by Raja Jagat Singh to house the image and even today, is greatly revered. The shrine houses an image of Shri Raghunath in his chariot.

Bijli Mahadev Temple : Set on a spur that offers some spectacular views, this temple is famous for its 20m high rod that periodically draws lightning, which shatters the 'Shivalinga' and scorches the building. Using only butter as adhesive, the 'linga' is then carefully pieced together by the temple pundit.

Deo Tibba : Also known as Indralika, this 2,953 metres (9,687 ft.) high snow dove Jagatsukh, has a legend around it, with Arjuna. He started performing 'tapa' at this mountain, under the advice of Maharishi Vyas, in order to obtain the powerful Pasupata Astra from Indra.

Banjar : It is about 58-km from Kullu at an altitude of 1,534m (5,000 ft.). Banjar is famous for its panoramic beauty and trout fishing in river Tirtham.

Nirmund : Situated in outer Seraj of Kullu district, Nirmund is at present a block headquarter. Known as 'Chhoti Kashi', it was once a seat of great scholars and intellectuals

History of Chail

According to the folk tales of the region, maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala incurred the wrath of Lord Kitchener, the Commander-in-Chief in the year 1891 resulting in the ban on the entry of the king to Shimla, the summer capital of the British. Angered by this, Maharaja planned to develop a new and much better summer retreat for himself. He found Chail, a small village near Shimla, the perfect place to develop as the summer capital. The village was developed according to the needs and requirements of the maharaja. A palace was also built for the king, which was taken over by the Himachal Pradesh Development Corporation in 1972 to convert it into a hotel. Chail is a Honeymooner's Paradise.

In the 17th century, many Rajput families from Rewari (present day Haryana) took refuge in the lower Himalayas after fleeing their homes. They finally settled down in a village, named Kasul. Now, we know this small village as Kasauli, and it is no longer just a tiny village but rather one of the popular hill stations in India.Though now we know present day Kasauli as a quiet little hill station, things were different before. This region fell under the Gorkha expansion plans. But later, the Gurkha surrendered the Sabathu Fort (one can take a tour to Sabathu and still see this fort), after which it was turned into a recovering or nursing home for British Nationals.

Another strange event took place in 1857, the Kasauli guard soldiers, about eight of them set out to join the revolt by the Gurkha regiment, after hearing of their revolt against the British. Unfortunately the British got to the Gurkha regiment first, and forced them into submission, and promised them amnesty.Fially, the Kasauli guards were left with no way out, and were severely punished by the British.After hearing all this, it is quite hard to believe that it is the same Kasauli, that saw such chaos and political disturbance, but then Nature is never cruel, it remains the same. Manali has a pre-historic legend behind its name. Vaivasvata, the seventh incarnation of Manu, the first creation according to Hindu mythology, found a tiny fish in his bathing water. The fish told him to look after it with devotion, for one day it would do him a great service. The seventh Manu cared for the fish until it grew so huge that he released it into the sea. Before departing, the fish warned Manu of an impending deluge when the entire world would be submerged and bade him to build a seaworthy ark. When the flood came, Matsya (fish), the first avatar of Lord Vishnu, towed Vaivasvata and the Seven Sages to safety. As the waters subsided, the seventh Manu's ark came to rest on a hillside and the place was named Manali after him.

The famous temple of Jwalamukhi is 30kms. from Kangra and 56 kms from Dharamshala. Dedicated to the "GODDESS OF LIGHT", the temple is one of the most popular Hindu temples in northern India. There is no idol of any kind the flame is considered as a manifestation of the goddess. An eternally burning and shining blue flame emanates from the rock sanctum and is fed by the priests with the offerings of devotees. The golden tower (dome) of the temple was a gift from the Emperor Akbar. Two important fairs are held here during the Navratras in earlier April and mid October.

Gulmarg - Introduction
Gulmarg, or meadow of flowers, is an apt term indeed for this idyllic flower-laden meadow at an altitude of 2,730 metres, in Baramulla district. In spring and summer, the honey-dewed orchards, rippling lakes and blue skies beckon every soul to sample the many delights the mountains and valleys have to offer. Golfing at 2,700 m above the sea, water-skiing in the lakes and angling for prized rainbow trout, or simply drifting down the willow fringed alleys of lakes in shikaras and living in gorgeous houseboats are some of the most favoured ones.

SEASONS

Kashmir has four distinct seasons, each with its own peculiar character and distinctive charm. These are spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Spring - which extends roughly from March to early May, is when a million blossoms carpet the ground. The weather during this time can be gloriously pleasant at 23oC or chilly and windy at 6oC. This is the season when Srinagar experiences rains, but the showers are brief.

Summer - extends from May until the end of August. Light woollens may be required to wear out of Srinagar. In higher altitudes night temperatures drop slightly. Srinagar at this time experiences day temperatures of between 25oC and 35oC. At this time, the whole valley is a mosaic of varying shades of green - rice fields, meadows, trees, etc. and Srinagar with its lakes and waterways is a heaven after the scorching heat of the Indian plains.

Winter - from December to the beginning of March is winter time, which presents Srinagar in yet another mood. Bare, snow-covered landscapes being watched from beside the warmth of a fire is a joy that cannot be described to anyone who has not experienced it. Some houseboats and hotels remain open in winter-these are either centrally heated or heated with ‘bukharis’, a typically Kashmiri stove kept alight with embers of wood, quite effective in the winter.

Srinagar hill station:

As per the legend there is a well in the Sonamarg valley whose water can turn anything into gold. The other possible reason for the name Sonamarg could be its location on the route to Central Asia. Sonamarg is in fact wrapped in sycamore, alpine flowers, silver birch, fir and pine.

Gulmarg hill station:
Gulmarg, or meadow of flowers, is an apt term indeed for this idyllic flower-laden meadow at an altitude of 2,730 metres, in Baramulla district. Situated at a distance of 51 km from Srinagar, it is a saucer-shaped bowl overhanging the main valley of Kashmir. The towering peaks above the meadow are covered with dense forests of tall conifers and gigantic fir and pine trees, all vying with each other to touch the azure skies. A clear day offers some breathtaking views from Gulmarg : fields of rice; clusters of walnut, pear and mulberry; meadows, ridges and forests that lead to the snow slopes of Khilanmarg; the majestic Nanga Parbat peak over a 100 km away.

Ladakh hill station:

Most visitors come to Kerala for its magnificent beaches and backwaters. But less well known are the Southern Ghats, hills rich in cardamom, pepper and tea plantations, and which have the highest peak south of the Himalayas - Anaimudi - standing at 2,694 meters (8,839 feet). Munnar Hill Station : Munnar is a small town surrounded by the Annamalai Hills (or elephant mountains) and tea estates. For the planters the most important building is the regional offices of Tata Tea, a large, yellow building which previously served as the company's railway station.
